How Entrepreneurs can find the right problems to solve with Design Thinking

written by Ruan Schutte

Design thinking is an approach to solving challenges using a human-centred approach, often creatively or innovatively. Designers and entrepreneurs are using design thinking approaches to solve challenges and opportunities in the present and future. The creative and innovative solution might not always be what's needed, but in some cases, it may be best. For more information on how design thinking and future foresight techniques can help you identify the correct problems to solve, read this post!

What is Design Thinking?

Design thinking is a process and a mindset for creative problem-solving. Entrepreneurs often use it to find new ways to solve problems or to improve upon existing solutions. The goal of design thinking is to create original, fresh, and cutting-edge solutions to problems as seen from the customer or user's perspective.

There are generally five steps in the design thinking process:

  1. Empathize: Understand the problem from the user's perspective. This step is all about understanding the needs and wants of the user. What are their goals, and pain points? What do they need in order to be successful?

  2. Define: Once you understand the user's perspective, you can start to define the problem. What is the root cause of the problem? What are all of the factors that contribute to it? Finally, you should reframe your problem as an opportunity statement.

  3. Ideate: This is the brainstorming stage, where you come up with potential solutions to the problem. Be as creative as possible here - there are no wrong answers! There are many different tools and techniques for brainstorming that can help elicit ideas you would not generally think of. At the end of the Ideation thinking process, you should prioritize or rank the ideas you would like to take to prototype. You can apply various lenses to help you filter and prioritise ideas. A good practice is to use a customer desirability lens first to make sure you rank ideas from your customer or user's perspective before applying other lenses.

  4. Prototype: Once you have a few potential solutions, it's time to start prototyping them. A prototype is a scaled-down or simplified version of your proposed solution. Creating a prototype to test your ideas and learn from the customer during testing is important. Prototypes could be as simple as a sketch right through to a working minimum viable solution.

  5. Testing: This is the stage at which you get feedback from your possible customers or users. It is important to listen and learn during this stage and not to try to sell or convince.

The Value of Design Thinking

Entrepreneurs have begun to see the value in using design thinking to find the right problems and then solve these problems using divergent and convergent thinking.

There are many benefits to using design thinking, including the ability to empathize with users, think creatively, and come up with innovative solutions. However, one of the most valuable aspects of design thinking for entrepreneurs is that it helps them to identify the right problems to solve. The ideas and solutions you generate are impacted by the way you frame the opportunity statement.

Many entrepreneurs try to solve problems that they think are important, but that may not actually be the root cause of the issue. By using design thinking, entrepreneurs can get to the heart of the matter and find the real problem that needs to be solved for the customer. This can save time and money and ultimately lead to a more successful business.

What are some strategies to use design thinking in your own business or situation?

There are a few different ways to identify the right problem to solve with design thinking. One way is to think about the problems that you are currently facing in your business or situation. What are the most pressing issues? What are the problems that are causing the most pain?

Another way to identify the right problem to solve is to think about the people affected by the problems in your business or situation. Who are your customers or clients? Who are the people who will be using your product or service? What do they need or want?

Future Foresight Practices and Entrepreneurship

The pace at which things in the world are changing is astounding. One cannot keep up with the detail of all these developments and changes, so one has to do ongoing horizon scanning. Look at the trends, convergences of technologies or practices, and other change drivers. These could be in the political, social, technological, business model, environmental, etc. spaces.

Also, keeping a close eye on adjacent industries, trends and changes could allow you to identify future problems and opportunities. Start to create scenarios five years from now using your horizon-scanning insights. You could start to define problems and opportunities that do not exist today but that you can begin solving already in an iterative approach.

Conclusion

Design thinking and future foresight are powerful tools for entrepreneurs who want to find the right problems to solve now and in the future.

By using a human-centred approach, design thinking helps entrepreneurs identify unmet needs and create solutions that are both innovative and practical. Design thinking is worth exploring if you're an entrepreneur looking for new ways to find and solve problems.

If you want to start solving tomorrow's problems and be a leader when those challenges and opportunities arise, future foresight is another critical tool you should investigate.
